Community Ministries:

We don't just do church; we do life! Our witness in our homes and in the community, where life is lived, takes on many shapes.

Resurrection is very involved in service to the Saginaw community. We are guided by the commandment of Jesus: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” and by the Word shared in Matthew 25: “... for I was hungry and you gave me food, thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me.”

Action Thrift Store: Several of our members volunteer at this Lutheran Social Services of Michigan agency which sells good, used merchandise at extremely reasonable prices. The store is located at 2114 N. Michigan Ave., Saginaw. Saginaw valley residents are invited to volunteer with this important community service ministry.

Habitat for Humanity - Saginaw: Every summer we provide financial, prayer, and sweat support for the Saginaw Blitz, working on building affordable housing in Saginaw County.

Luther Manor: Each February, we host the weekly Bingo party at Luther Manor and provide prizes for the participants. We include Luther Manor in the sharing of our benevolence giving in the community. Luther Manor is located in Saginaw and is a Lutheran Social Services of Michigan agency that provides rehabilitation services, hospice, and skilled nursing facility services.

Neighborhood House: Our financial contributions help support this vital community ministry for families and youth in Saginaw.

Youth - their faith in action - collected clothing donations for an area family!

Lutheran World Relief (LWR): Each summer our members donate supplies for school kits that LWR distributes internationally for children returning to school after the disruption of war or for adult literacy classes.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation is extended to our Busy Fingers Quilters group who faithfully completed quilts that were sent yearly to LWR. An LWR quilt is special! It brings warmth on a cold night or shelter from the sun on a hot day. It becomes a bed, a room divider, a backpack to carry belongings, and at times even a home for refugees and other people in need. The group is retiring their quilting needles effective Jan. 2010. Again, thanks for your dedication over the years!

Saginaw Metro Ministries Food Pantry: Monthly we contribute food items and a financial gift to sustain this vital ministry to the hungry in our community. The Lutheran Food Pantry is located at St. John Lutheran Church on Federal Ave. in Saginaw. The Food Pantry is open the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 10 am - 4 pm. Saginaw area ELCA parishes and LSSM agencies established Saginaw Metro Ministries as a non-profit religious education and community service ministry/advocacy organization.

We remember, with fond memories, Gotto and Ed Kabobel who took to heart the verse in Matthew 25 - for I was hungry and you gave me food. Pictured here are Gotto (left) and Ed (right) sorting food donated by our members to a local food pantry.

CROP Hunger Walk: Each fall the Saginaw area Church World Service group sponsors a community CROP Hunger Walk. Some of our members are walkers and others pledge donations. Together the community raises awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting efforts.

Partnership Center: We make financial and other donations to Partnership Center. The Center works with economically disadvantaged persons, responding to specified needs and fostering opportunities for new beginnings. While originally founded by the Catholic Churches in Saginaw, in 2005 the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Saginaw Metro Ministries joined in expanding the presence of this agency in the community.

Neighborhood Outreach: Each December we participate in the Giving Tree at Chester Miller Elementary School. Members donate winter clothing to assist with clothing needs of area children.

Chester Miller School Snack Treats: There is a basket at the Welcome Counter for donating snacks for children that either forgot or cannot afford to bring their own to school. The school requests sealed purchased snacks ONLY such as granola bars, chips, pretzels, fruit roll-ups, dried fruit snacks, cheese crackers, and apples.

We are supporting the efforts of the Saginaw YMCA by participating in their capital renovation campaign through a 3-year financial giving pledge.

Members donate clothing or baby items to the Old Town Christian Outreach Center's "The Baby Pantry." Cash gifts can also be made to this community service program

Group Service Projects: Our Shalom Circle, Men's Club, youth group and Women's Club are also involved with service projects in the Saginaw community. These projects are in addition to the projects sponsored by the whole congregation and its ministry teams. Our clubs and circles are much more than social activity groups. We have our fun and great fellowship - but we are grounded in service to others.
